Angus MacLeans writing is notable for its authentic flavor of early Central California, and a style that is as vivid, entertaining, humorous and true-to-life. When Angus retired from ranching, he dedicated his time to writing about early days in California; particularly San Luis Obispo County. His tales deal with adventure and romance, rough and ready sport and hard work on the trail. His feeling for the era and the setting of his stories is shared by his sister, Ione MacLean Bowman; also a rancher and illustrator of his books. Both Othor (Angus) and Ione grew up in the ranch lands where many of these tales took place.
Angus wrote for True West and the Daily Press plus his five books. He has tried to preserve some of the old legends of the West before they are forgotten. Angus writes colorfully about the victims and the perpetrators as well as about the crimes committed in San Luis Obispo County.
